Howth Golf Club, Dublin
Howth Golf Club is located on the beautiful scenic peninsula of Howth in North-East County Dublin and features spectacular views over Dublin Bay, the city and south towards Wicklow and North over the Ireland’s Eye as far as the Cooley and Mourne Mountains.
Founded in 1916 the Heathland links style course was designed by the renowned golfer and course architect James Braid. Howth Golf Club is the perfect blend of old and new with traditional and modern trends helping maintain the character of the course.
DG Ireland editor, Kevin Markham says:
"Howth is a hilltop course drenched in gorse, heather and lots of adventure. The scenery along Dublin’s coastline and over the city is wonderful, and, wherever you stand, the views stretch out below you. Plenty of energy is required as you’ll be heading up and down this 5,700m course all day… the walk up to the changing rooms will give you a hint of what’s to come. These constant shifts in elevation and bumpy terrain mean you’ll encounter a vast array of fun shots over and through the gorse and heather."
"There’s a joyful wildness to it all. There is one other critical factor to consider: Howth was designed by the legendary James Braid, so expect some smart design features… and smallish greens. The dogleg 5th is an obvious example. Little has changed to the design in its 100 year history… and that should be embraced."
Favourite Hole: The dogleg par four 17th is drenched in gorse and heather and from the high tee you can drink it all in.
What's in the Bag? The smarts to play sensible golf on a short course. Play for what you can see because off line shots can disappear all too easily.
