Winter in Costa Del Sol: More daylight, more golf!
Málaga’s fine weather encourages golf even in winter, and the golf courses make long stay deals attractive!
Winter and early spring are the best time of year to play golf in Málaga. The destination offers more than 70 golf courses in Málaga Province and coastal Cádiz, home to the well-known Real Club Valderrama – the only golf club in Spain to have hosted the Ryder Cup (1997) and the host of the Spanish Open by Sergio García Foundation as part of the European Tour. Likewise, Aloha Golf Club in Marbella hosted the Andalucía Costa del Sol Women’s Spanish Open. The fact that the golf courses in Costa del Golf are chosen for the most important tournaments in Spain and Europe gives an idea of the world-class infrastructure available.
Larger numbers of golfers begin to come to Costa del Sol in autumn but in fact, the weather in Malaga is excellent in winter too, with sunshine and temperatures around 20º C during the day. Winter in the Costa del Sol is nothing like that in northern Europe, where it is virtually impossible to enjoy outdoor sports (except for snow sports, of course!). Malaga is a warm and welcoming travel destination offering top-notch facilities, attracting 12 million tourists a year. In winter, it offers the additional advantage of a more tranquil, but still lively, environment, in contrast with the more boisterous place it can be during the summer months.
Promoting the fine weather in the region, Costa del Sol based golf clubs and resorts offer long stay deals, so that you can spend anything from a weekend to a month enjoying your favourite sport.
There is always something to do or see in Málaga Province. In addition to playing golf, most golfers want to get away from it all and explore the destination. There is much more to Costa del Sol than first-rate sports facilities. There is history, culture, entertainment and nature to enjoy. And everything is within easy reach.
Some resorts, like Valle Romano Golf & Resort, Atalaya Golf & Country Club or Albayt Resort & Spa, among others, offer 30-day packages. Hotels and holiday apartments offer this kind of deals as well. Select Marina Park, on the outskirts of Fuengirola, offers ‘Stay & Play’ deals jointly with nearby golf facilities (Lauro, Calanova, Mijas, La Cala, Alhaurín) and other golf resorts (El Chaparral, Cabopino, El Paraíso, Guadalhorce).
On the eastern coast, in the region known as Axarquía, as well as in the hinterland, you can also play golf. You can visit, for instance, geological attractions like Cueva del Tesoro, near Rincón de la Victoria, or the world-famous cave in Nerja; beautiful natural areas such as the one surrounding Caminito del Rey, in the Guadalhorce Valley; or top-notch museums in big cities like Málaga. Packages range from 7 to 28 nights, accommodation + golf (for instance, in Añoreta Golf).
In short, winter and early spring are a perfect time of year to spend more time on the Costa del Golf. Getting to Malaga Airport, the gateway to winter warmth, is easy from most cities in the world. Costa del Sol invites golf travellers escape the winter gloom and to immerse themselves in an environment which offers so much more than just great golf courses, blue skies and superb restaurants.
